Term 2 No 5 - 20 May 2010

 Dear Parents

This term the Key Competency, which we are focussing on with the children, is that of Participating and Contributing. This means that we are encouraging each child to be actively involved both inside and outside of the classroom. There can perhaps be no greater opportunity for that to happen than when children are away on camp, as Year 5 are this week. We hope that they have a fabulous time and look forward to reporting on their experiences next week.

The Habits of Mind are often used to focus attention on our Key Competencies. Thinking Interdependently is one such HoM that links particularly well with Participating and Contributing.

At last week’s workshop I discussed the value of working and thinking collaboratively. Art Costa discusses that ‘working in groups’ requires the ability to justify ideas and to test the feasibility of solution strategies on others. It also requires the development of a willingness and openness to accept the feedback from a critical friend. Through this interaction the group and the individual continue to grow.

Listening, consensus seeking, giving up an idea to work with someone else's, empathy, compassion, group leadership, knowing how to support group efforts, altruism--all are behaviours indicative of cooperative human beings. School offers many opportunities, every day, for the children (and staff) to think and work interdependently.

Last Sunday Participating and Contributing was in much evidence around school, all day…and not just with the children! Firstly those who attended the gardening working bee made a huge difference as they did sterling work, particularly alongside the hall, tennis courts and class garden area. Thank you to all involved and to those who provided refreshments to keep the workers motivated. Later in the day we had parents and children playing netball and football until it got dark and sharing a fish and chip supper; it is lovely to see such activity, and teamwork, on our school site at the weekends.

Kind regards
Allan Short
Principal

My Greatest Feat

Pedometers will be given out to children on Monday 24th May as part of a national programme designed to get children active, inspired and involved with the All Whites epic journey.   As they make it all the way to the 2010
Fifa World Cup in South Africa.

Over the next three weeks the children will record how many steps they have completed each day online.  Each child has been entered and given a unique username and password so that they can update their number of steps and
complete the programme.

It would be great if you can support them on their journey and in turn get behind the All White’s on their amazing feat!

Please ensure your child keeps the pedometer on them, as we unfortunately can’t replace any that get lost.

VAS Vipers
The VAS Vipers played their final game of the season against the Meadowbank Mystics in a play-off game to decide the 3rd and 4th places.  The Mystics had finished the normal season at 1st place, whereas the Vipers were 3rd place.  Last time they met, the Mystics won 10 - 0, so it was always going to be a tough game.  The Vipers once again showed how they have improved during the season - in a very close and physical game. Unfortunately the game ended with Mystics winning 6 - 3.  However it was a great game played by the Vipers!. William Thompson received player of the day for his great determination and defensive play.  William also scored one free throw basket.  Charles Hill was awarded Magic Moments for his great running around the court, and applying the coaches instructions.  Well done boys! Josh Kennard scored the other basket.
