Property Update
We are delighted that the two refurbished classrooms are now completed and next week Ms Andrews and Mrs Reynolds will be setting up these new rooms ready for the children to move into. In turn this will mean that once Room 13 have finished relocating the library will be back to normal operations!
As many of you will have noticed Dragon Drive was out of action this morning as the concrete pad was being poured for the new building. We will have one more such disruption next week as another major area of concrete needs pouring. Unfortunately such procedures are weather dependent and so at this point we cannot tell you on which day that will be, but as this morning on that day please use the staff entrance to walk down into school.
Whilst the construction of the new building has been affected by the bad weather of late, Summit Building have pledged to work over the weekends to try and still meet the target of having the project finished at the start of Term 3. Therefore please be aware of this if you access the school grounds at the weekend.
School Events
Each week there are many events happening around school. Please keep checking the newsletter, calendar and website for details. My thanks this week to the staff and parents who accompanied the Year 5 Camp at Long Bay – what a fantastic time was had by all.
We have also had two PTS events this week. Last Night almost 100 ventured out in the rain to support the Movie Night and this morning families with Pre-Schoolers were welcomed to our Kindy Kids morning tea. Importantly most families attending today were new to VAS and we had current parents, staff and pupils mingling with everyone in the hall. My thanks to the PTS for all they do to make our school such a welcoming community.
Please support the following upcoming events:
Friday 28th May - Heart Jam (Gold coin donation tomorrow and PE uniform required by all). See below.
Friday 4th June Green Day – Environmental awareness day; try to walk to school and wear something green!
8 - 12th June Sportathon – Sponsor forms and details have gone home this week and are available from the website.
14th, 21st and 25th June World Cup Breakfasts – Details home next week. Early starts at school; come and cheer on the All Whites!
New PE Uniforms
The new PE uniforms, which were delivered last week look great and have proven to be a real hit with our children. We have received many enquires this week with people trying to order this uniform.
Parents were given many opportunities to make an initial order, and indeed to try the uniform for sizing purposes, prior to the original deadline. Unfortunately we are not carrying extra stock and the uniform was delivered to order. Please do not try to order online or request uniform at this time.
We intend to make another bulk order before Term 3 to meet the demand from new families and those who chose not to last time. Details will be in next week's newsletter.
Kind regards
Allan Short
Principal
AFTER ASSEMBLY TOMORROW - Please bring gold coin donations.
Heart Jam is to raise money for children born with heart defects. 12 babies are born each week in NZ.
There are 10000 children living with heart defects which means extensive hospital visits, corrective surgeries and ongoing medication. Money will go to supporting programmes and services for children.
"I have had open heart surgery twice now. I have 4 butterfly scars, one little one at the bottom of my tummy and a big one down my chest. My mum and dad treat me like a normal kid but the teachers are a bit worried and watch me more closely than the others. It has taken a long time for me to do what I want to do and some things I won't be able to but at least I am well and happy right now so I make the most of it" a quote from a 12 year old girl named Breanna.

BASKETBALL The spring basketball season starts in September and we are looking for Year 3 and 4 players who may be interested in playing. The existing team has just finished a great season and have shown huge improvements. Between now and then I will be running informal training sessions at the school (most probably on alternate Sunday afternoons, weather permitting) to develop the skills of the existing players, and get them ready for the spring season.
I thought this would be a great opportunity to get new Year 3 and 4 players involved, giving them a head start before the season starts in September. If we get enough players we will be able to have separate Year 3 and Year 4 teams, to carry us on into the future.
The training sessions will focus on basic skills and positional play, followed by friendly games.
If you are interested please contact Scott Kennard by email
