Victoria Avenue School’s Sportathon week has been a fantastic start to the 2010 FIFA World Cup! On Tuesday the sun shone as we held an Opening Ceremony, which included a parade along Victoria Avenue by all 500+ children, each class representing one of the qualified teams. It was a noisy and colourful spectacle, with everyone dressed in National team uniforms, singing loudly and flags flying proudly.
As the teams arrived down Dragon Drive the official World Cup anthem played. The teams then lined up around the football pitch and we were treated to an amazing display by the NZ Freestyle Soccer Champion Ollie Bowman…wow!!
The tournament began with National Anthems of Spain and Argentina who competed in the opening game refereed by Mr Short in front of a sell out crowd of competitors and parents. In a hard fought match Argentina (Room 4) overcame Spain (Room 3) by the narrowest of margins 1-0. Friday’s rematch will be eagerly anticipated.
Each afternoon we have competitive matches, Sportathon challenges and soccer skills on display both at school and at Shore Road. If you haven’t managed to catch any of the action so far you still have one day left to join in the fun.
Many thanks to the staff, parents, children and particularly Miss Whittington for making this a most memorable event!
Stop Press – Our roving reporters have been out and about to bring you news of the opening days of this fabulous event (click here). Yesterday’s game between Australia (Room 10) and The Netherlands (Room 11) even made today’s edition of The Herald…great action shot William! Click here for the Herald article.
Farewell Gift for Mrs Slater
As mentioned in last week's newsletter we are holding a special assembly for staff and pupils to celebrate Mrs Slater's 23 years of service to Victoria Avenue School.
If you would like to contribute towards a gift, to be presented to her by the children at that event, then we invite you to do so.
Please send any money in an envelope with MRS SLATER written on the front, and put it in the box in the main office, or give it to your child's classroom teacher, by Wednesday 16th June.

After School Care Survey
As I mentioned recently due to the imminent retirement of Barbara Hale the Board of Trustees are currently looking at alternative providers for families requiring After School Care. As part of this process we would like to gain feedback from the parent community. We would like to hear views from current, past and perhaps future users of an after-school programme to help inform our decision-making.
A short online survey has been designed and should only take a couple of minutes to complete. The survey will be open over the next week and will close on Monday 21st June. Please take the time to respond to this request; your feedback will be much appreciated. Click here for the Survey Link. Please note this link does not seem to be working with Firefox. If you open the newsletter in Safari or possibly Explorer it works fine.
Welcome
On Monday we welcome Mrs Debbie Oats and the first four students into Room 12. Due to the large number of new entrant children at VAS this year Ms Andrews (Room 11) and Mrs Reynolds (Room 13) now have full classes and so our new class is starting earlier than first planned. They will set up temporarily in the room so recently vacated by Room 11 but are looking forward to construction work finishing so that they can move in to one of the two new classrooms next term.
I am sure that you will join us in welcoming Debbie and the new children and their families into the VAS family.

"The Mini World Cup Sportathon at Victoria Avenue School"
By Owen Short and Rowan Print - Room 16, Year 3.
At VAS we are holding a Sportathon. The sport we are playing is soccer.
As part of the Opening Ceremony there were amazing, breathtaking tricks before the match and loud cheers.
In the opening match Argentina played against Spain. The referee was Allan Short, the principal of VAS. Before the game they played their national anthems. The teams stood shoulder to shoulder while their national anthems were played.
There was an awesome start to the match, 1-0. Argentina scored a brilliant goal. At the end of the first half the Argentinian goalie caught the ball so it was still 1-0.
Owen spoke to some of the spectators at half time. Some of the comments included:
"It is a good game, and the goal scorer had good positioning." Hamish
"It's been a good game with a good goal." Paolo
"This match has been cool." Samir
Rowan interviewed Lucas, one of the French team members. He said, I'm good at soccer, I think the Frenchteam might win the Sportathon."
It's the second half. The referee is very good because he spotted when teams needed a free kick and made the right decisions.
It's the end of the game. Argentina won 1-0.
The Opening Game by Isabelle Walker Room 3 Year 6
With the game finishing up and leaving the score at one nil. Argentina (Room 4) had beaten Spain (Room 3). With Kees Ursem from Room 4 scoring the winning goal.
Harrison Miller (Argentina’s coach) comment was: “We were both good teams but Argentina came out on top.
Dylan Brown’s (Spain’s coach) comment was: ” they were lucky we got over them in the second half but we didn’t quite get there.”
The next game Argentina has is with Denmark (Room 2) Good Luck both Teams!
