Dear Parents
Despite the atrocious weather yesterday morning many of you took the opportunity to visit during Open day and share in your children’s learning experiences. We had over 100 parents join the Junior Syndicate in the hall for their enthusiastic and vibrant musical welcome…what a start to the day! For a few hours yesterday I enjoyed visiting classrooms as a parent, rather than as the Principal, and as ever the children, not just my own, humbled me with their contributions. It is a joy to see how positive they are about their work, their friends and our school.
I realise that it is not always possible for parents to take time out of their busy working lives to be present at school events but when we do it is invariably a positive experience for the children and us. Over the last two weeks of term there are many such opportunities. This week we have had our Open Day and the Winter Field Sports Day and next week there are four performances of Hercules. I hope everyone, at some point, can get to at least one school event, it is well worth the journey!
Grandparents Day
On Tuesday 26th October we are holding our Grandparents Day here at Victoria Avenue School. We have once again chosen the day after Labour Weekend, which is often a time when extended families get together, and we hope as many Grandparents as possible will be able to visit with their grandchildren on that day.
As a large number of grandparents may attend (last year we had almost 500) we will run separate morning and afternoon sessions in order to accommodate everyone comfortably. Grandparents of Middle and Senior pupils will be invited to our morning session and those with grandchildren in Years 0-2 will be invited to our afternoon session, of course some may qualify for, and wish to attend, both sessions!
The day will begin with an assembly, lead by the Principal, followed by a small concert where the children will perform a number of items for grandparents. After this grandparents will accompany their grandchildren back to their classrooms to meet their teachers and look at their work. Children will then give their grandparents a tour of the school, finally arriving back at the hall where we will have morning/afternoon tea together.
The event will also coincide with the start of our Book Week and Mrs Clark has been talking to the children this week about this, and in particular the Character Dress Up Day, which will be on Grandparents Day this year. This year we are also going to invite Grandparents, if they wish, to go along to the library and chose a book with their Grandchildren that they may wish to purchase and donate to the school library. Grandparents should feel no obligation to do so but several asked last year if they could leave a donation of some sort on the day and we felt this might be an appropriate way to gift something of lasting value to the school.
There is a very special bond that exists between grandparents and their grandchildren and the opportunity to share time together is very important. I know from previous experience that some grandparents will travel quite some distance to attend such days and it is always a pleasure to welcome them to school. We hope that this will become an annual event for us. If your child does not have a Grandparent who can attend but there is a significant older person in their lives that they would wish to share the day with, then of course they may invite them instead.
In order to arrange adequate seating for the day and also to assist with catering arrangements, can all families

Travelwise Update

It was great to see so many walkers on our Walking School Buses last Wednesday at the ‘WSB Winter Warm Up’ where they each received a well deserved cup of milo for all their walking efforts during Winter.

Over the next two weeks we will be promoting walking once again. Walkers earn points for walking to school and the class with the highest average will win a fun board game. In addition, we have registered our school to support World Car Free Day on Wednesday 22 September. If your child walks to school not only will they help the planet but they will be in the running for spot prizes.

SPORTS NEWS
BASKETBALL RESULTS
VAS Yr 6 played the first game of the Spring season and outclassed ACG
Parnell with a fantastic score of 41-6. The team played extremely well with
more accurate shooting and superb defence from the whole team.
VAS Vulcans played Parnell and won 20 v 10. This was a great result as we
lost to them by a good margin last season.
Luca & Sarah shot really well, each with 4 baskets.
Thomas did especially well as it was his first game - he stole lots of ball
& had good aggression.
Dan rebounded & passed really well, Michael intercepted & dribbled well &
thanks to Nick for filling in for the first 8 minutes with lots of
intercepts & great passing.
This was the best game that we have played to date, due to more passing &
better team work - Well done guys!
