Term 3 No 10 - 23 September 2010

Dear Parents
For many of us getting up and speaking in front of a group of people can be a daunting experience, now imagine that it is a stage, the spotlights are on, and you have a hall full of people…all watching you! That was the challenge put before each and every child in the senior school over the course of this last week.

The Young Hercules shows have been stunning. The children’s energy, enthusiasm and composure have been a joy to behold and each audience has clapped, cheered and thoroughly enjoyed a theatrical feast. With the last show tonight we will literally bring down the curtain on a wonderful celebration of the most amazing people, our children. I have previously mentioned just how important performance is as a key element of building self-confidence. This week we have seen the results…each child seemed to come off the stage a few inches taller.

It is worth reflecting on the logistics required to not only coordinate the performances of 170+ children, who are ‘on stage’ for the full show, but to make up and costume each individual, it is a tremendous achievement. We are grateful to those parents who so ably assisted in these matters. I wish to thank everyone, particularly our wonderful teachers, Alison Laxon, the Senior Syndicate staff and our drama teachers Fiona Flynn and Megan Jennings, who have enthused and inspired each and every child to perform with confidence.

One should never forget that along with everything else schools should be fun, using that as a barometer the senior syndicate children looked as though they had scored 10 out of 10 this week!

Grandparents Day
It is not too late to book Grandparent places for the day. Please let the office know as soon as possible if your children have Grandparents who can join us on this special occasion. This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or download and return the slip attached to this newsletter indicating numbers of grandparents who will be attending.

Term 4 Calendar
The Term 4 calendar dates will all be available on our website from this week. In addition a hard copy will be sent home to families tomorrow.  Click Here for copy of Term 4 Calendar.  We have tried to include all major events and where possible have given timings. Obviously there may be dates, which are added, or for reasons beyond our control have to change, but any such amendments will be advised in future newsletters and online.

Allan Short

Uniform Update

GST Increase
Due to the GST increase, uniform prices will be changing for all orders placed from 1 October. For an updated price list “click here”.

PE Uniform
From the beginning of 2011, all children are required to wear the new PE uniform.
The final 2010 opportunity to order PE uniform will be in Week 3 of Term 4. The PE uniform is not stocked in our uniform shop, so if your child has not yet purchased a PE uniform, they will need to order one at this time. Further details will follow.

Hats
In last year’s survey there was majority support for a sunsafe hat, therefore, as previously advised, the school baseball caps can no longer be worn from the beginning of 2011.
The existing bucket hat may still be worn, and we are currently sourcing a new style bucket hat.
From 1 October, baseball caps have been reduced to $5 and the current bucket hats have been reduced to $10.

Schoolbags/Gear Bags
We are no longer stocking our existing schoolbags, but we’re in the process of sourcing a new style ergonomic schoolbag.
Drawstring gear bags for PE gear will also be available later in Term 4.

Online Shop
During the holidays we will be changing our online DPS merchant from Paypal to Payment Express. We will also be changing the payment options to online credit card only. You can still pay by manual credit card or bank transfer by using a manual uniform order form.

Promise-auction-star.jpg
Earlier this year the PTS held a Promises Auction. Here is a heart warming story from this event ........... one of friendship and puppy love.

On the auction night we bought a holiday for our new puppy, a four night stay for an outdoor dog with a loving family and their own wise old labrador. For an absolute bargain Rusty had his first holiday booked and paid for and both families eagerly looked forward to it!

Jenny and Andrew and Cate and Angus knew much more about looking after dogs than we did so we felt very happy leaving him there and pretty soon it was obvious that although Rusty was a bit annoying Ruka was getting a spring back in his step trying to keep up. Ruka taught Rusty all kinds of things including how to swim and even now if he is getting rascally Ollie will say he needs another holiday with Ruka!

We have kept this friendship alive with Ruka having a holiday with us and Rusty was even invited back there for the July holidays.

SPORTS NEWS

BASKETBALL RESULTS
The Vicky Ave Y6 Chiefs had a convincing win over St Kents Blue 37 – 9. Great all round play by Ishan, Calvin and Nicholas. Isaac played a solid game, dribbling the ball down the court and a awesome game from Oscar who ready to take the pass and shoot. Great defensive play from Ethan. Thank you to Luca for filling in the last exciting moments of the game. Well done team.

VAS Vikings played against St Kents Red and lost. The Vikings worked really hard to get the ball down the court, passing the ball well against a larger and very much taller team. Well done.

Vicky Ave Venom (Year 3) played Vicky Ave Vipers (Year 4). It was a good chance for both teams to get some well needed court time, as this was only the second game of basketball for a lot of the Venom players and the first game for a couple of the Viper players. The Venom showed a great amount of determination, holding the game to a nil-all draw until the last minute, when Josh Kennard from the Vipers team scored the winning basket. The Venom showed a lot of potential and I'm sure they will develop into a strong team by the end of the season. Player of the Day for the Venom was Rebekah Hoffman and Players Choice award went to Emily Nicholas. In the Vipers team William Thompson shot a lot baskets and was incredibly unlucky that none of them went in.

Vicky Ave Vipers also played St Heliers Eagles to make up for last weeks cancellation. The Eagles pulled away to and early 4 - 0 lead. The Vipers stepped it up a notch in the second half and pulled the game within reach, trailing 4 - 5 (final score) for the last quarter but were unable to take the lead. However, the Vipers showed great determination to come back and were great in their positional play. William Thompson got Player of the Day, for his great attcking play, shooting and positional play in defence. William got 1 point from a free throw. Kaihua Zhu got the Coaches Award for his great positional play and defensive work. Josh Kennard got 3 points from a basket and free throw. A great game by Charles Hill and Georgia Jackson also, for their defensive work.
