Term 4 No 1 - 14 October 2010

Dear Parents

It has been great to welcome everyone back to school this week. Some families had stayed home to enjoy the sun, which began to make a belated Spring appearance, whilst others journeyed overseas to experience warmer climes. Everyone has their own story to tell and I know that the children have enjoyed catching up with their friends and teachers again.

The school was a hive of activity over the holiday with Mr Davy working particularly hard supervising a host of contractors cleaning the buildings inside and out. One particular development that the children were excited to see on their return was the wooden ‘boardwalk’ running along from near the Stirling Street entrance to the bottom of the junior playground. No more muddy path, hurrah!

You may remember that back in July the Hobson Community Board gave us a grant of $5000 towards creating the ‘boardwalk’ along the bottom of the forest area as part of the overall school development. I will be writing once again to thank them and send photos of the completed project but must also thank the parents from our gardening group who assisted with this application, Debra, Kate and Louisa; your efforts are greatly appreciated!

Grandparents Day
On Tuesday 26th October we will be welcoming many grandparents to school for this special day. The children are looking forward to both performing for their grandparents in a short concert and to sharing their school with them.

If for any reason you have not yet let the office know that your child has grandparents attending can you please do so tomorrow so that we can finalise arrangements, particularly catering requirements. The timetable for the day is given below. Our grandparents of children in Years 3-6 are invited to the morning session and those with grandchildren in Years 0-2 in the afternoon. Of course some grandparents may wish to attend both sessions!

9.15am Welcome and Assembly (Year 3-6)
9.25am Children perform a variety of Items
9.55am Grandparents to visit classrooms and tour the school with their grandchildren
10.30am Morning tea for grandparents in the hall
11.15am Book Day Character Parade
Early Lunch 12.00-1.00pm
1.15pm Welcome and Assembly (Year 0-2)
1.30pm Children perform a variety of Items
2.00pm Grandparents to visit classrooms and tour the school with their grandchildren
2.30pm Afternoon tea for grandparents in the hall

Book Sales and Donations
Last year we had a number of Grandparents who asked if they could contribute in some way to our school. As Grandparents Day corresponds to our Book Week we are inviting any Grandparents (or parents) who would like to purchase and donate a book to the school library to do so.

During Grandparents Day anybody who wishes to do so may visit the library and choose from a range of books selected by Mrs Clark, and on her wishlist for the library. We will then have a bookplate put in the book to acknowledge the generous donation.

Book Week Character Parade
Mrs Clark has been talking to the children about book week and on
Tuesday 26th October (Grandparents Day) everyone is invited to dress up.
The Character Parade will be at 11.15am that day.

Mufti Day – Red and Black
Tomorrow we are supporting, along with other Auckland Primary and Intermediate schools, the Canterbury Earthquake Gold Coin Donation Day. All money gathered by this event will be collected by the APPA (Auckland Primary Principals Association) and sent to help those schools affected by the earthquake.

We will show our support for the Canterbury schools by wearing their colours, so dress up tomorrow for our Red & Black mufti day! Now whilst the timing isn't great, particularly with Canterbury winning the Ranfurly Shield this weekend, we will just have to remind ourselves that it is all in aid of a good cause!

Sunsafe
We wanted to remind you that all pupils are required to wear a school sun hat during outside play in the summer months. Following Labour Weekend we require all pupils to have their school sunhat in school each day. We know just how harmful and damaging the sun can be even on overcast days and protection for our pupils is a priority.

This rule will be strictly enforced - no hat, no play. It would also be useful if families could ensure that their children have put on sunscreen in the morning prior to school. In addition each class has a pump bottle of sunscreen that is available to pupils at all times.

As was stated in the last newsletter, last year’s parent survey indicated an overwhelming support for a sunsafe hat to be introduced. Therefore, as previously advised, the school baseball caps can no longer be worn from the beginning of 2011.

The existing bucket hat may still be worn, and we are currently sourcing a new style bucket hat. As a consequence our remaining baseball caps have been reduced to $5 and the current bucket hats are now only $10.

Kind regards
Allan Short

BANDANAS WEARERS!!!!

Earlier this year the PTS held a Promises Auction. Here is a another story ~ the rural experience of one of our families.

We purchased a Farm Stay experience through the Auction of promises and recently organised to use the experience on weekend of the 18th September. I am writing to express my sincere gratitude to the Irwin family who hosted us over the weekend and let you know what a fantastic time was had by all. We drove down to Awhitu Peninsula on Saturday and got there around midday to a lovely home-made lunch by Deb’s. This is Steve’s parents farm who were away, they had opened up their home for us to come and stay. The kids had a list of things to do to keep the farm running and got to feed cows and sheep, ride the tractor and quad bike around the farm, help move cattle and round up sheep with Haggis the farm dog. One of the highlights was watching the cows being milked which Steve had especially arranged. Due to the bad weather the power went out so we had an impromptu dinner of fish and chips in front of the roaring fire - needless to say the kids slept well while the wind raged outside.

A lovely weekend was had by all - thank you so much Irwin Family from the Bowie’s

SPORTS NEWS

BASKETBALL RESULTS
The Vicky Ave Y6 Chiefs played the St Thomas Cougars. Last season the Cougars won the championship, so it had the makings of a tough game. The Cougars got away to an early lead and led 7 - 4 for the middle part of the game, with the Vipers first 4 points being scored by William Thompson. In the last quarter of the game the Vipers scored 6 points with baskets by William, Alice Foster and Josh Kennard and took the lead 10 - 7. Another 2 points were scored by the Cougars in the last few minutes, reducing the lead to 1 point, creating an exciting end to the game, but the Vipers held strong and got a well deserved 10 - 9 win. Player of the Day was Alice for her attacking and passing and Georgia Jackson got the coaches award for her passing and movement around the court. Well done team!

Vikings
The Vikings played against Cornwall Park Aces in a fast and exciting game, but were unable to match a much taller side with a final score 33-10.  Ishan and Jan put the points on the board.  A tremendous effort, both offensively and defensively during the game.

Gala2011v2.png
It is hard to believe the countdown is really on for the Gala on 3rd April 2011, and the Gala Committee are working hard to get as much as possible in hand before the end of the year.

All sorts of things required!!!!!!!!
Parents what we ask of you right now is for stuff! The list is below, please check your garages and cupboards this weekend for anything you can help us with
· Glass Jars (clean please) and preferably with lids to the school office ASAP, we have a pickles and chutneys working bee planned and have so few jars we really need your help here, please bring any you have to the School Office.
· On that note the working bee to make preserves and chutneys for the gala is planned for Wednesday 17th November at Kim Hamilton’s house, if you are available to help for a couple of hours on that day or have produce you could donate please contact Christine Johnston on This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or mobile 021929729 and she can give you details of where and when.
· Your junk can be someone else’s treasure! and any old bric a brac, books, toys, clothes etc are being collected this term for the White Elephant Stall, you simply bring them to school and drop them off at the hall kitchen where it will be collected for storage.

URGENT!!!!!  Recruiting for an Operations Person

Also needed for the Gala is a person who can help as Operations Person, alternatively you may be 2 friends who are happy to share the role. If you know someone, or a couple of parents who could be suitable, perhaps tap them on the shoulder and ask if they will step up to help. The involvement prior to Christmas is negligible (other than attending a few meetings and enlisting additional help) but will build in February and March as the Gala day approaches. The team of parents already enlisted to help at the gala includes working and stay at home parents, mainly mums who have chosen to give some of their precious time to help this vital fundraiser for the school. The Operations Person is a pivotal role and we really do need to secure some assistance here. If you are interested or want to learn more about the role contact Kim Hamilton on This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or 021727058

Thanks in advance for your help, The VAS 2011 Gala Committee

The final tally for the Yummy Stickers was fantastic!!
Last year the total was 5748 - this year the grand total was 10245!
Many thanks to all those who contributed
- a special thanks to Barbara Hale from After School care who made a special effort for us!
