Dear Parents
" Go the extra mile. It's never crowded!"
While the extra mile in most places may be sparsely populated, at Victoria Avenue School it is quite the opposite. We are blessed as a school community with staff and parents who are prepared to put in the hard yards to really make a difference to the lives and experiences of our wonderful children.
These first years of a child’s formal education are the most important of all. Habits and attitudes are formed, and a values system is built that will leave a lasting impression on our young children.
To paraphrase Oscar Wilde, we live in an age, where we often know the cost of everything and the value of nothing. Unfortunately in some countries school are ranked and valued according to a set of measured criteria. Unfortunately these criteria are often just narrow snapshots of a school that fail to recognise some of the most important elements of what good schools do.
It may be relatively easy to measure a ‘reading age’ or a test of mathematical ability but how do we measure our child’s happiness or their level of self-esteem or personal confidence? A positive self-image is important for personal development, not just of children but of adults too. Often it can be as simple as giving someone your time, listening to them, or helping them in some way, which can make a huge difference. Implicit in that action is an acknowledgement that you value that individual.
As parents you play a significant role in supporting our school, and in particular our children, in this regard. Parental help in its multitude of forms means more individual attention for our children. Even for your own child, when they see you here at school helping in some way they get the message that they and their education are important and special.
Over the past week I have had the pleasure of meeting with many of you who have gone, and continue to go, the extra mile for our school. Class Parents, PTS members, Gala Committee, Gardening Team, Directory Committee are just some of the parental groups who really do help make the difference at our school. On behalf of the staff, Board of Trustees, fellow parents and most importantly our children I offer each and everyone who contributes so much, in so many ways, a heartfelt THANK YOU!
Kind regards
Allan Short
IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING THE ATHLETICS DAY
ATHLETICS DAY TOMORROW 26 November - middles and seniors to be at school by 8.15am.
ALL CHILDREN WILL TRAVEL TO AND FROM THE ATHLETICS DAY ON THE BUSES - One or two families have asked staff if they may take their children home directly from the venue tomorrow, please do not. This is a Health and Safety issue - as you can imagine with 550 children travelling tomorrow making alternative arrangements for some complicates matters and could cause confusion as we count heads on and off the buses. Please meet staff and children back at school. Thank you for your assistance in this matter.

School Office Vacancy
School Accountant
In 2011 we will have a vacancy for an individual to work part-time (approx 15-20 hours per week) in the school office as the School Accountant. This position arises from the decision of Jenny Hayward to relinquish this role next year. Jenny has kindly agreed to stay on for a few weeks at the beginning of the 2011 school year to help the transition process. We are grateful not only for Jenny's assistance in this process but also for her professional expertise and huge contribution over the last few years managing and developing the school’s financial systems.

The Vicky Ave Vipers played the St Heliers Eagles in their first finals match. The Eagles were ranked higher on the table and had beaten the Vipers last time they met, so the Vipers needed to put out a strong team performance to come away with a win. The Eagles got away to an early lead with 2 baskets from their star player, but the Vipers were playing well and came back with a brilliant "fake and shoot" from Charles Hill as well as a basket by Alice McIlroy-Foster. Although the score was tied 4 - 4 at half time the strong team performance by the Vipers saw them begin to dominate. In the second half the Vipers built on their dominance, pulling away to a 12 - 4 lead, with 2 more baskets by Alice, another from Charles, and one from Josh Kennard. The Eagles fought back in the last few minutes with another 2 baskets from their star player but the Vipers held strong, winning the game 12 - 8. Georgia Jackson and Charles were fierce on defence with William Thompson doing a great job shutting down their star player. Alice and Josh tore the Eagles defence apart, with their breakaways. It was a truly outstanding effort from the Vipers, the sort of game a coach dreams about. Player of the Day went to the whole team - as they all played like CHAMPIONS!
