First Newsletter for 2011 Print
Dear Parents

Happy New Year!

I hope that you have all enjoyed a wonderful summer with your families and that the children are ready for the start of school next week. The staff have been hard at work preparing for the term and are looking forward to welcoming everyone back on Thursday 3rd February.

As you will read below the PTS have arranged for The Coffee Man to be at school next Thursday so hopefully that will give people an extra incentive to stay on site and catch after the break. In particularly it is always important to make our new families feel welcome at the start of the school year so if you spot an unfamiliar face at the classroom door please introduce them to others in our school community.

Kind regards

Allan Short
Principal

Staffing
We are saying ‘hello’ to two new members of staff this term. Mrs Munro (Room 3) and Mrs Coleman (Room 10), I am sure that you will all join me in welcoming them to our school family. A number of staff have ‘moved’ this holiday to take up residence in another classroom.

Miss Whittington (PE) and Ms Crook can now be found in the office spaces behind Room 12.

Everyone on the staff is looking forward to greeting the children next week.

Meet the Teacher Evening
Please notice that this event is at 7.00pm on Wednesday 9th February. It will start with a brief meeting in the school hall for all parents followed by an opportunity for everyone to meet with their child’s teacher in their classrooms. We hope that every child will have a least one parent at this event.

Building Work
There has been great activity over the holidays. I have outlined briefly work done:
• Junior Block – Rooms 8, 9 and 10 have been completely renovated including inserting sliding doors from each room out to the forest area, where we intend building decking later in term 1. In addition the cloakroom area has been expanded.
• Playground – The damaged areas outside of Rooms 1-6 have been repaired, including concreting some areas previously covered with hotmix, to prevent such damage in the future.
• Field – Major work has been done to the field. All of the damaged areas at the Shore Road end have been leveled, sanded and replanted. This area will be out of action for several weeks to allow the new grass to grow. The whole field has been re-sanded and new drainage and sprinklers have been installed around the new junior block.
• Security – A new alarm system has been installed throughout the school.

NB - Room 10 will not quite be finished in time for the start of term. Mrs Coleman has prepared Room 15 as a temporary home for Room 10 students for the first few days of term next week.

Uniform
Over the past twelve months we have made several changes to our school uniform. A period of grace was given whilst these changes were implemented. From the start of term one the new uniform is in place and we would appreciate your help in ensuring our children are wearing the correct uniform each day. A list of uniform requirements are on our website: http://victoriaave.com/uniform

Items which are no longer acceptable school uniform include: skivvies (both colours); summer and winter dresses; red PE shirts and sweatshirts.

The new hats will be available asap until then the old caps are still acceptable.

After-School Activities
We are finalising the activity programme for the Term 1 activities and will advertise this to parents in Week 1 of the term.

PTS
On the first day of school we will have The Coffee Man on site so we can have a catch up after dropping children. Please join us for a chat!

Over the next few weeks we will working flat out on the arrangements for our School Gala, the major community fundraiser for 2011. Please make sure that the day of Sunday 3rd April is booked into your diaries now! This should be a fabulous event but we need your support.

We would also like to encourage any parents to come and join the PTS. There is much to be done this year and the more helpers we have the less work we all have to do. All are welcome, old families and new. It is not all hard work…we have fun too! If you are interested either let the school office know or phone Kim Hamilton (PTS Chair) on 021 727 058.

Calendar
A hard copy of the Term 1 calendar will be sent home to all families with your child next week. You can however look on our website were the provisional calendar for Term 1 has been published. http://victoriaave.com/school-calendar

School Lunches
All school lunch options will commence from week beginning 7 February. For order forms and ordering options please go to our website:
http://victoriaave.com/our-school/lunch-orders

Newsletters
We will continue to email the link to the newsletter to families each Thursday, where it will appear on the school website (starting Thursday 10th February). Not only does this save on administration time but also the cost of printing is not insignificant, both financially and environmentally. If any families find it difficult to access the newsletter electronically please let the office know and we will arrange for a hard copy to be available for you to pick up from school.

Walking School Bus
If you are interested in joining one of our six walking school buses in 2011 full details of routes and contact details of the coordinators can be found http://victoriaave.com/walking-school-bus/routes-and-rosters

Portland Road Crossing Patrol – It has been brought to our attention that the number of parents available to help with the Portland Road crossing each day is dwindling. We need the commitment of a few parents who are prepared to supervise the crossing on a regular basis afterschool. If you feel you could assist with this, perhaps just one day a week, please contact the school office. This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

Lost
Penny Hacking lost a small Nikon camera in a bright yellow canvas wallet on the night of the Leavers' Dinner in December. She is desperately hoping to find this as it has a whole year's worth of family photographs on it that are irreplaceable. If you do find this please either hand it in at the school office or contact Penny direct on 021 024 15977
