Year 5 Camp
Abseiling
‘‘This will be a piece of cake’’, I muttered to myself.
I marched up the track with the rest of my group eager to get the first turn, then strolled through the gate. I had a quick glimpse down. We were so high up that I couldn’t move. The rest of the group and I slowly shuffled to the seats at the end of the wooden bridge. One by one everyone was about to have a turn to abseil down the long black ominous looking wall. When what seemed like two hours ended, it was my turn. I wouldn’t dare look down even though we were perfectly safe. On the inside I was terrified but on the outside I was calm. I don’t know why I did this even though we weren’t forced to. I felt like I was as high as the sky tower. My feet were wobbling like jelly. My legs sluggishly slid back until they reached the metal bar. Steadily I leaned back shaking with fear. This was easier than I thought it would be. Finally I worked my way down and proudly hopped onto the ground feeling very relieved that my ordeal was over.

Year 5 students had the BEST 3 days last week - thanks to parents who helped us out, to Camp MERC who gave us such a good time, to the teachers who supported us so well and to our students who made the most of every opportunity!

OUTLINE OF GRANDAPARENT'S DAY ~ TO BE HELD ON 7 JUNE 2011
Grandparents of Senior Syndicate pupils and those in Rooms 19-21 will be invited to our morning session and those with grandchildren in the Junior School and Rooms 16-18 will be invited to our afternoon session, of course some may qualify for, and wish to attend, both sessions! (Please note to even up numbers the Middle Syndicate has been split with three classes in the morning and three in the afternoon)
The day will begin with an assembly, lead by the Principal, followed by a small concert where the children will perform a number of items for grandparents. After this grandparents will accompany their grandchildren back to their classrooms to meet their teachers and look at their work. Children will then give their grandparents a tour of the school, finally arriving back at the hall where we will have morning/afternoon tea together.
Programme times are as follows:
- 9.15am Welcome and Assembly (Year 4-6)
- 9.55am Grandparents to visit classrooms and tour the school with their grandchildren
- 10.30am Morning tea for grandparents in the hall
- Early Lunch 12.00-1.00pm
- 1.15pm Welcome and Assembly (Year 1-3)
- 2.00pm Grandparents to visit classrooms and tour the school with their grandchildren
- 2.30pm Afternoon tea for grandparents in the hall

SKIING COMPETITION ~ August 29 - September 2 at Whakapapa ~ UPDATE
Every year the North Island Primary schools Ski Championship takes place with around 400 children representing their schools from around the North Island. This year the championships will be held from August 29 thru to September 2 at Whakapapa and would involve some ski training at Snow Planet in Silverdale. Gate training will take place during June/July on five Sundays, to avoid after school activity clashes. These are already booked. As this is slalom racing it is expected the children involved would be competent skiers although prior experience with gates is not a necessity. Some great interest from Victoria Ave students already, we obviously have a number of capable skiers amongst us. It's not too late to register your interest, we are allowed to take 2 teams down (5 in each). We have enough for one team but would love a few more to have 2 teams.
